17 Inspirational Horse Quotes That You Will Love [With Images]

If you are a horse enthusiast, chances are you will have heard a saying or two over the years about your favorite hobby. But it can be hard to remember them when you want to use them, and you might be wishing there was a list of sayings and quotations about horses and riding that you can reference. Well, in answer to your prayers, here is that list!

It’s great to be able to pluck a relevant phrase out of the air in conversation, or to have an inspirational quote pinned up in the tack room. Here are a few of my favorite fun inspirational horse quotes:

“No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle” - Winston Churchill

The late Prime Minister of the UK, Winston Churchill, got this one right. Riding is so very far from wasting time; it is a chance to experience nature, to ride and relax (as long as you don’t have a wild horse, that is!)

Riding: The art of keeping a horse between you and the ground

I love this one because of its humor, simplicity and truth – what more can be said about riding? If there is no longer a horse between you and the ground, you are no longer riding.

The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horse’s ears -

The ancient breeders of the Arabian horses loved their mounts so fiercely that some were even permitted to sleep in the tents to protect them from the harsh desert climate.

Horses are uncomfortable in the middle and dangerous at both ends

This is the opinion of a great many people who don’t ride, or who have not yet been lucky enough to have had much horse experience, and it makes me chuckle!

It’s a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider’s nuts, the horse bolts!

We all know this one, don’t we? If you approach your ride in a calm fashion then chances are the ride will be calm, but if you are distracted or feeling disturbed, then in all likelihood your horse will react the same.

All I pay my psychiatrist is the cost of feed and hay, and he’ll listen to me any day

I have yet to find anyone who listens as well and as sympathetically as a horse to all my woes. True, they don’t have any answers – but they’re great listeners.

A canter is the cure for every evil -

A good canter can blow away the cobwebs, leave you feeling refreshed and energised, and releases adrenaline into the body, giving you more energy. It is also an incredible feeling of freedom!

If your horse says no, you either asked the wrong question or you asked the question wrong -

I love the Parelli style of natural Horsemanship, and this quote sums it up – instead of blaming our horses when things go wrong, we should look at how we are treating them and asking them to perform.

It is not enough for a man to know how to ride; he must know how to fall

This is one of the very important things we must learn as riders. They say that it takes seven falls to make a rider – in my experience it is always more!

He knows when you’re happy, he knows when you’re comfortable, he knows when you’re confident… And he always knows when you have carrots

Oh, so true! A horse is very good at picking up on your mood, and may act accordingly. And how is it that they always know where the treats are?

A horse is worth more than riches

We all know this is true. A horse is worth far more than you paid for him; he is a friend, a confidant, a loyal companion and a partner in crime.

When you’re young and you fall off a horse, you might break something. When you are my age and you fall off a horse, you splatter -

I laughed at this quote when I was younger; now that I am getting older I laugh with a little less enthusiasm!

Feeling down? Saddle up

This is one of my most favorite inspirational horse quotes. There really is no better way to cheer yourself up than to go on a lovely ride on your best friend, whether it’s Haflinger or Fjord horse.

When riding a horse, we borrow freedom

A lovely quotation that is so very true. When we are riding we are suddenly free from the cares and constraints of every day life and we are able to concentrate on what really matters.

Look back at our struggle for freedom, trace our present day’s struggle back to its source, and you’ll find that man’s pathway to glory is strewn with the bones of the horse

This rather macabre quotation bears repeating, because actually it is true. Many of man’s endeavours would not have been possible without the horse, and they have sacrificed a lot for us over the millennia.

Wherever man has left his footprint in the long ascent from barbarism to civilisation we will find the hoof print of the horse beside it

Another quote that reminds us of all the things we have to be thankful to the horse for; they have been beside us throughout the majority of our evolution.

A lovely horse is an experience… It’s an emotional experience that is ruined by words.

This is a fantastic quote to end on. We all know the experience of horses is an amazing one, and that it is different for everyone, so why should we try to encapsulate it in words?
